Edge Housing, a local charity based near Holywell Press at The Kings Centre in Oxford, provides homely accommodation to rough sleepers and those who are homeless. It then supports and mentors them into jobs to get them back on their feet.

The small but growing agency is currently supporting 30 formerly homeless residents in eight houses across Oxfordshire. The houses are not institutions but real homes, with living rooms and pleasant gardens, which the charity’s staff and volunteers ensure are decorated to a high standard and well maintained.

Staff meet with each tenant every week to help them find work and move into permanent accommodation. According to Project Director Rachel Bashir, “We want to stop the revolving door hostel-type approach to tackling homelessness and help people to live”.

Edge Housing will be celebrating its 10th birthday in October 2022. Since starting in 2012, 61 formerly homeless residents have been helped to find jobs and become independently housed. The charity is preparing to open its tenth house in March – a new house for homeless women.

Holywell Press will sponsor the charity during the countdown to this prestigious anniversary, which will include a programme of public talks and events to raise greater awareness of homelessness in Oxford. Rachel adds, “Edge is my second family. Every day I am humbled by the strength shown by our residents and challenged by others’ resilience and desire to keep moving forward.”

As one of Edge Housing’s Corporate Ambassadors, the Holywell Press team can look forward to learning more about the homeless sector in Oxford and the work that Edge carries out, as well as opportunities to volunteer with and fundraise for the charity. Holywell’s Managing Director, Ben Burrows, concludes, “This partnership is a wonderful fit for us. I love the idea that we can play a part in helping such close neighbours achieve such positive outcomes for Oxford’s homeless.
